It has a 7th-generation Intel i5 processor, 16GB of RAM, a 512GB SSD, and no dedicated graphics card. The AI therefore has to run entirely on the computer's CPU. To free up as much computing power as possible, Windows was replaced with "Ubuntu Server", a lightweight version of Linux that runs without a graphical desktop. This leaves more of the computer's limited memory and processing power available for the AI. The setup used "Ollama", an open-source platform for running AI models locally, together with Open WebUI, which provides a simple chat interface similar to popular online AI tools.</span></p><p><span style="font-size: 16px;"><br></span></p><h2>How Powerful Was It?</h2><p><span style="font-size: 16px;">The computer was tested with several different AI models. The largest was a 14-billion-parameter model, while smaller 7B, 1B and 0.5B models were also tested. The results showed an important trade-off, larger models generally produced better answers but took much longer to respond. The 14B model took around 10 minutes to produce a PowerShell script, while the 7B model was more than six minutes faster and still produced a usable result. The smallest models were much faster but often produced inaccurate or unreliable answers. This means an old computer can technically run surprisingly capable AI, but users should not expect the speed or accuracy of modern cloud-based services.</span></p><p><span style="font-size: 16px;"><br></span></p><h2>The Biggest Advantage, Privacy</h2><p><span style="font-size: 16px;">Speed is not the main reason to build a local AI. The biggest advantage is privacy. With Eustace, information submitted to the AI stays on the local computer. The setup even had internet access disabled, meaning prompts and files could remain inside the user's own network instead of being sent to an external AI service.
